Cheshire Elementary Students Rewarded With Ice Cream Party
CHESHIRE, Mass. — Cheshire Elementary kindergarteners and fourth-grade students were treated to an ice cream party late last month after completing their Flat Stanley projects.
The Greylock Federal Credit Union held up its end of the deal: the students complete their Flat Stanley Projects and they get ice cream.
Brian Astorino, with Greylock Federal Credit Union, said he read a book from the "Flat Stanley" series during the school's Read Across America event. He promised a party if the children completed the supplementary project, in which they cut out and design their own Flat Stanley out of paper and take him on adventures.
"They decorate their little Stanley and as they went on trips and did things, they documented it," Astorino said. "They took pictures and wrote in their journals about the things they did."
Over April break, Stanley when on myriad adventures, including an Albany (N.Y.) Devils game, the batting cage, fishing, and one Stanley was even lucky enough to make it down to the state of Florida.
Fourth-grade teacher Laurie Cantarella said the project engages students at all levels.
"What is neat about it is it's an activity that can be used among all of the grade levels, and ... it's very motivational," Cantarella said. "They really enjoy it."
Kindergarten teacher Heather Emerson agreed and said it also gets the students out of the house and writing.
"They loved it, and they went to all kinds of places," Emerson said. "It's a nice project that they are excited about and it sneaks that writing in."
Also, the Greylock Federal Credit Union donated $500 to split between the two classes
"I'm not sure what we are going to get," Emerson said. "It is kind of overwhelming, but it will go towards something we need that we just can't afford."
