Drury High Names Valedictorian, Salutatorian for 2016

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Drury High School has named Olivia Kathleen Carlson as valedictorian and Michael Robert Mazzu as salutatorian of the class of 2016.

Both will speak at graduation exercises at the high school on Thursday, June 9.

Carlson, daughter of Darrell Carlson and the late Patricia Carlson of Stamford, Vt., will be graduating this year with an overall grade average of 101 and has taken a full honors course load, including seven Advanced Placement courses as well as courses at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

While attending Drury, she has been involved in myriad activities, sports and organizations. She is a three-sport athlete, participating in the soccer, basketball and track teams for four years, and was elected a captain of each sport. Carlson is a four-year member of the Student Council, was an active member of the Pep Club and Prom Committee, and coached youth sports for several years.

She also was the student liaison to the District Attorney's Youth Advisory Board for two years, and was selected to represent Drury at the Berkshire Youth Leadership Program.

Carlson will be attending Williams College in the fall to major in biology and chemistry.



Mazzu, son of Robert and Lisa Mazzu of North Adams, will graduate with an overall grade average of 100. He has taken an extremely challenging course load, including six AP courses.

He was inducted into both the Nu Sigma and Pro Merito honor societies, and received a Perfect Attendance Award and the Principal's Award for being among the top five students in his class.

In addition to his strong academic record, Mazzu was a vital member of Drury's concert, marching and jazz bands, performed with the Stage Team, was a varsity cheerleader, and a three-year member of the MCLA wind ensemble and a dedicated member of the Student Council. He also works part time at Desperados in Williamstown.

Mazzu will be attending University of Massachusetts in the fall to major in music.

BAAMS' Monthly Studio 9 Series Features Mino Cinelu

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — On April 20, Berkshires' Academy of Advanced Musical Studies (BAAMS) will host its fourth in a series of live music concerts at Studio 9.
 
Saturday's performance will feature drummer, guitarist, keyboardist and singer Mino Cinelu.
 
Cinelu has worked with Miles Davis, Sting, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, Tracy Chapman, Peter Gabriel, Stevie Wonder, Lou Reed, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Vicente Amigo, Dizzy Gillespie, Pat Metheny, Branford Marsalis, Pino Daniele, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Salif Keita.
 
Cinelu will be joined by Richard Boulger on trumpet and flugelhorn, Dario Boente on piano and keyboards, and Tony Lewis on drums and percussion.

All proceeds will help support music education at BAAMS, which provides after-school and Saturday music study, as well as a summer jazz-band day camp for students ages 10-18, of all experience levels.
 
Also Saturday, the BAAMS faculty presents master-class workshops for all ages, featuring Cinelu, Boulger, Boente, Lewis and bassist Nathan Peck.
