Naloxone, Rescue Breathing and CPR Training Set for June 21

Print Story | Email Story

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A naloxone (Narcan), rescue breathing and CPR community training will take place at North Adams Ambulance at 10 Harris Street on Tuesday, June 21, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Naloxone is an opioid overdose reversal drug that can be administered to someone experiencing an overdose from heroin or prescription opioid pain medication. Those who attend the training will learn to identify the signs of an overdose, to assess if an overdose victim needs rescue breathing or CPR, to perform rescue breathing and CPR, to administer naloxone, and how to obtain low cost or no cost naloxone.

All residents of Northern Berkshire are welcome.

The training will be delivered by AJ Jusino, an EMT and assistant chief at North Adams Ambulance. Jusino has administered naloxone in the field countless times and reversed many overdoses by citizens of northern Berkshire County. As a result, he speaks from experience about the skills and challenges involved in reviving people from an opioid overdose.

The training is free, but advance registration is required to Jusino at ajusino@northadamsambulance.com or Wendy Penner at wpenner@nbccoalition.org or 413-663-7588, ext 14. The training is sponsored by North Adams Ambulance, the Rx Heroin Work Group of the Northern Bershire Community Coalition, and the Berkshire Opioid Abuse Prevention Collaborative.

Anyone witnessing a potential overdose should immediately call 911. The Good Samaritan Law protects victims and those who call for help from charge, prosecution and conviction for possession or use of controlled substances. Naloxone can be obtained without a prescription from Rite Aid or CVS pharmacies, from Tapestry Health, and from Learn To Cope, a weekly support meeting for loved ones of those suffering from addiction.

Clarksburg Sees Race for Select Board Seat

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The town will see a three-way race for a seat on the Select Board in May.

Colton Andrews, Seth Alexander and Bryana Malloy returned papers by Wednesday's deadline to run for the three-year term vacated by Jeffrey Levanos.

Andrews ran unsuccessfully for School Committee and is former chairman of the North Adams Housing Authority, on which he was a union representative. He is also president of the Pioneer Valley Building Trades Council.

Malloy and Alexander are both newcomers to campaigning. Malloy is manager of industrial relations for the Berkshire Workforce Board and Alexander is a resident of Gates Avenue.

Alexander also returned papers for several other offices, including School Committee, moderator, library trustee and the five-year seat on the Planning Board. He took out papers for War Memorial trustee and tree warden but did not return them and withdrew a run for Board of Health.

He will face off in the three-year School Committee seat against incumbent Cynthia Brule, who is running for her third term, and fellow newcomer Bonnie Cunningham for library trustee.

Incumbent Ronald Boucher took out papers for a one-year term as moderator but did not return them. He was appointed by affirmation in 2021 when no won ran and accepted the post again last year as a write-in.
