'Strut Your Mutts' Gathering Planned in Adams

ADAMS, Mass. — Dog lovers are invited to "Strut Your Mutts" at the Visitor Center this Friday.

Animal lover and Adams Friends of Animals Scholarship creator Roy Thompson hosting the  gathering for dogs and owners with coffee and doughnuts.

"I want people to meet each other and I want the dogs to get to know each other," he said.

Thompson said the first gathering, from 9:30 to 11 on Aug. 12 will mostly serve as a social gathering where he plans to explain the future of the group.

He said he would like to hold two meetings a month with different programming. That includes having Police Officer Curtis Crane and his K-9 Kumar, a technician to clip nails at a reduced rate and a specialist who can advise parents on the best way to teach their children to approach a dog.

"How many times has a 4- or 5-year-old stuck out their hand out in front of a dog and the dog grabs it," Thompson said. "I want people to be aware of their animals. Dogs do a lot of thinking and you don’t understand them sometimes."

He said the gathering is another attempt to improve the lives of animals in town.

"I want to make better pet owners and my overall goal is to improve the welfare of animals," Thompson said. "I want them to live like a dog should. Not in fear, not in hunger and not in cruelty .... It makes society a better place."
