GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School will hold "Fall Fridays," open houses for parents of children entering pre-K though eighth grade, on Oct. 14, Nov. 18 and Dec. 9 at the school, located at 35 West Plain Road.

Starting at 9 a.m. in the library, parents will experience Steiner's curriculum in person, meet parents and staff, visit classes in session, tour art studios and venture into gardens and grounds, with plenty of time to ask questions and learn more about Waldorf education in the Berkshires.

For parents of children who will be 6 by June 1, 2017, the school will hold an additional workshop, "Next Steps: First Grade and Beyond," on Tuesday morning, Nov. 22, starting at 9 a.m. This workshop offers a chance to learn more about Steiner's first grade curriculum, observe the current first grade class and save a seat at the Thanksgiving assembly, a unique all-in-one opportunity to observe the progression of students from first through eighth grades.

"Steiner students look you in the eye," Faculty Administrator, or head of school, Michael Junkins said. "They don't answer a question with a question. They are not afraid to raise their hands, not afraid to make a mistake. They are poised, articulate and engaged in the classroom. We believe this genuine self-motivation is key to their future success, and our teachers work to inspire it every day."

Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School's curriculum of academic excellence activated with movement, music, outdoor learning and the arts has been preparing students to achieve their full potential for 45 years, and earned Steiner "Best School in the Berkshires" accolades for 2014, 2015 and 2016. The school offers rolling admissions and sliding scale tuition, and is now welcoming new applications.

Interested families can register for these free fall events by emailing Admissions Director Robyn Coe at admissions@gbrss.org or calling 413-528-4015, ext. 106. Personal tours are also available.

Dalton Committee Seeks Funding for Invasive Species

By Sabrina DammsiBerkshires Staff
DALTON, Mass. — The Open Space and Recreation Committee discussed addressing the invasive species at the Pines trailhead during its meeting last week.

There will possibly be a money article on the annual town warrant requesting voters allocate $20,000  from free cash so that the committee can apply for a Community Forest Stewardship program grant. The Select Board placed it on the annual town meeting warrant on Monday.

During a walkthrough of the Pines, Jess Toro, co-owner of Native Habitat Restoration, urged the committee to apply for the program.

According to Town Manager Thomas Hutcheson, although the grant would be reimbursed, the town needs to allocate the amount the committee is requesting in order to apply.

If approved, the first phase would be to hire a consultant and focus on cutting and painting large invasives and vines in the 17 acres, staying out of any wetlands and wetland buffers.

The committee has been thinking about how to address invasive species at the Pines since the start of the project and this year will be taking its first step into the long process of invasive species management.

However, finding a professional to help with invasive species has been difficult due to the limited number of experts in the field, said the committee.
