MCLA to Host 2nd Annual Berkshire Natural History Conference
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The second annual Berkshire Natural History Conference will feature presentations by local and regional naturalists as well as acclaimed authors on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' Church Street Center.
"This annual event will bring natural history home to the Berkshires," said Tom Tyning, a professor of environmental science at Berkshire Community College and a lead organizer of the event. "We are really excited to gather programs and like-minded people together to help understand and appreciate the deep natural heritage that surrounds us all in the Berkshires."
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is designed to appeal to naturalists and to the general public.
The conference will feature researchers Joan Edwards and Alyssa Bennett, in addition to local field biologists and naturalists.
Other programs on the agenda include:
- Pam Weatherbee's introduction to Amos Eaton, a local botanist, geologist, and educator.
- Wood Turtles in Massachusetts — Michael Jones
- Salamander Mimicry — Steve Tilley
- Berkshire Geology and Landscape — Paul Karabinos
- Migrant Saw-whet Owls — Drew Jones
- Aquatic Insects – Kelly Nolan
- Go Botany Web – a Great Berkshire Resource – Elizabeth Farnsworth
Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students. Admission includes lunch, and access to all of the natural history presentations. Advance registration is strongly encouraged: www.berkshirecc.edu/bnhc.
Donations are welcome. The event is sponsored by: BCC, MCLA, Green Berkshires, Orion Magazine, Berkshire Environmental Action Team, Hoosic River Watershed Association, Williams College Center for Environmental Studies, Massachusetts Audubon Berkshire Sanctuaries and the Hoffmann Bird Club. A storm date is scheduled for Nov. 19.
