North Adams Airport Look At More Paving Projects

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Airport Commission would like to add the paving of the access road and the Turboprop East parking lot to its list of projects.

Mark Candiloro, Turboprop East director of maintenance, told the commission Tuesday that the parking lot is in bad shape.

"It is really starting to get broken up and busted up and I was just wondering if at some point we could add that into the improvements of the airport and put a new coat of blacktop in," Candiloro said.

Commissioner Trevor Gilman agreed and said the access road could also use a fresh coat of pavement.

"Since we basically rebuilt every single thing at the airport now the road leading in and the parking lot look so awful right now because everything else looks so good," he said.

Chairman Jeff Naughton asked Gale Associates representative Erik Strand if there was any money left within the grants that were used to make other improvements to the airport.

Strand said there probably is, but in all likelihood, the airport would not be allowed to use the extra funds because the paving was not in the scope of the grant.

Strand said he would still ask.

Gilman added that he envisions that the new paving would fit into the scope of a project down the road and the commission would keep it in mind.

In other business, pilot Michael Milazzo asked if the commission would push all glider traffic to the south side of the runway and power planes to the north to enhance safety.

"I have given this a lot of thought and I think we can enhance some safety at the airport," Milazzo said. "Occasionally you get guys that won't call in until they are into the pattern and if I just released a glider I'm flying an airplane with 200 feet of rope behind me and another plane could be in my vicinity and snag that."

Naughton said they would take the recommendation into account and place it on next month's agenda.

"I think that is something we would be more than happy to take into consideration," he said.
