STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — Norman Rockwell Museum will start 2017 with a series of winter break art workshops, intended for college students and adults, during the month of January. Students of all skill levels are welcome, and will have the opportunity to advance their work and strengthen their portfolio.

From Monday, Jan. 2, through Friday, Jan. 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the museum will offer classical drawing techniques with illustrator/video game artist Patrick O'Donnell. Participants will explore technical, traditional image building techniques for drawing the human figure during this weeklong workshop. Focused on the methods and teachings of master draughtsman and anatomist George Bridgman, who was Norman Rockwell's teacher, the class will focus on golden age disciplines for realizing the human form. Students will draw from a live model and have the opportunity to study from original works of Bridgman himself, which are featured in the museum's permanent collection.

From Monday, Jan. 9, through Friday, Jan. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the museum will present the weeklong workshop "Painting Like the Illustrators of the Famous Artists School." Painter/illustrator Dan Howe will discuss and demonstrate the step-by-step Famous Artists School techniques for painting the figure as mastered by Norman Rockwell, who was an instructor for the popular art correspondence school started in the late 1940s. Paint mixing, value, color strategies, and figure construction will be taught through observational painting from a live model. Utilizing an under-drawing and value plan, students will learn to compose fully realized paintings of the figure.

Admission for each weeklong workshop is $200. Advance registration is required by calling 413-931-2221 or emailing register@nrm.org.

Dalton Planning Board OKs Gravel Company Permit

By Sabrina DammsiBerkshires Staff
DALTON, Mass. — The Planning Board approved the renewal of Nichols Sand and Gravel's special permit for earth removal.

The company, located at 190 Cleveland Road, operates a gravel pit there.

The hours of operation will remain 7 to 4 p.m. The commission approved owner Paul Nichols' request to allow trucks to depart the property in either direction.

Nichols has to apply for renewal of the special permit every year. The previous permit required the truck to exit the property to the right.

It makes more sense to go left if truck drivers have to go to the Pittsfield area, Nichols said. He has talked to the residents in the area and they are agreeable to the change.

Former residents requested this stipulation nearly 16 years ago to reduce the number of trucks using the residential street to avoid disturbing the quality of life and neighborhood.

There weren't any residents present during the meeting who expressed concerns regarding this change.
