Lenox Memorial graduate and Georgetown University senior Scott Carpenter ran a personal record time of 4 minutes, 3.57 seconds Saturday to win the Big East indoor mile championship at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Athletic Complex on Staten Island.

 

Carpenter helped the Hoyas score big points in the event, where Georgetown finished first, second and eighth.

 

In the team competition, Georgetown finished fifth of seven schools.

 

Taconic graduate and UMass-Boston junior Dominic Nda finished fourth in the 60-meter dash on Saturday at the New England Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center in Boston. Nda posted a time of 6.97 seconds, a quarter second behind Northeastern’s Naukym Morton, who set a New England record with a time of 6.72.

 

Among the other athletes competing at this weekend’s New Englands was Northeastern sophomore Tucker McNinch. The Lenox graduate placed 14th in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 15:45.11. Northeastern’s Huskies won the regional championship with 177 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Rhode Island, which finished with 114 points.

 

While East Coast runners, jumpers and throwers toil away under artificial lights, Mount Greylock graduate and Pomona-Pitzer sophomore Carter Stripp got the outdoor season under way earlier this month with a second-place finish in the 3,000 meters in a dual meet against Occidental College in Los Angeles.

 

Back indoors and in the pool, Wheaton College freshman and Mount Greylock graduate Elizabeth Bernardy helped her team tie for its best ever finish at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Championships earlier this month.

 

Bernardy finished fifth as an individual in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.94) and ninth in the 200 breaststroke and swam legs on Wheaton’s second-place 200 and 400 medley relay quartets.

 

Roger Williams University junior Alyssa Bush (Hoosac Valley) placed fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.78) and sixth in the 200 fly to help the the Hawks win the New England Intercollgiate Swimming and Diving Championship this month.

 

Mount Greylock graduate Kat Chenail placed 53rd in Saturday’s 15-kilometer freestyle cross country ski race at the Bates Winter Carnival, which doubled as this year’s NCAA Regional Championship. Chenail was 57th in a 5K classic race on Friday. Her Bates team placed seventh out of 16 schools competing in the event.

 

Williams College’s Luke Costley, also a Mount Greylock grad, was 20th in Saturday’s 20K event for the men, helping the Ephs place fifth in the team competition. On Friday, Costley placed 24th in a 10K classic race.

 

Speaking of NCAA Championships, the Westfield State women’s basketball team is heading to its second straight NCAA Division III tournament after knocking off Framingham State, 83-74, on Saturday in the MASCAC Championship Game.

 

Mount Greylock graduate Lucy Barrett scored 14 points, and Pittsfield’s Lauren Carnevale scored two and grabbed a rebound in nine minutes of work for the Owls (19-8).

 

Framingham State, by the way, reached the league title game by knocking of MCLA in the MASCAC semis, 60-59. Pittsfield High alumna and MCLA senior Courtney McLaughlin scored 16 points in her final appearance for the Trailblazers. She finished her career averaging 8.9 points per game in 99 appearances for MCLA.

 

This year’s MCLA team also featured junior Emily Moulton (Drury) and sophomore Mckenzie Robinson (Hoosac Valley). Moulton grabbed 4.6 rebounds per night as a starter. Robinson came off the bench to play 18 minutes per game, averaging 1.3 assists and 1.0 steals per night.

 

The MCLA men (2-22) had five Berkshire County products on their roster. They, along with every player on this year’s team, are coming back for the 2017-18 season.

 

Pittsfield graduate Keiland Cross and St. Joe grad Joseph Wiggins led MCLA with 16.0 points per game each. Cross also averaged 7.0 rebounds per night. Drury graduate Nolan Bird and Wahconah’s Collin Parrott averaged 8.9 and 6.3 points per game, respectively. Freshman Dahndray Sistrunk (Hoosac Valley) came off the bench to average 7.6 minutes per game.

 

Southern Vermont College senior Brandon Casella and the Mountaineers finished their season one game away from making it to the big dance. On Saturday, Becker College ended SVC’s season with a 79-70 decision in the NECC Championship Game.

 

Casella, a graduate of St. Joseph, averaged 11 minutes per game and 1.2 points per game this winter as Southern Vermont went 17-10.

 

For the SVC women (1-24), freshman Kelly Dobbert of McCann Tech played nearly 26 minutes per night in her first year on campus. She scored 3.6 points and grabbed 3.9 rebounds per game.

 

Another first-year collegian, Castleton State (Vt.) freshman Katlyn Toomey (Drury) played nine minutes per game in 21 appearances for the Spartans (17-9), who lost in the semi-finals of their conference tournament.

 

At Springfield College this winter, Drury graduate Danielle Racette wrapped up her college career for the Pride, who went 18-8 and was upset by Clark in the NEWMAC quarter-finals. Racette had four assists in her final game and averaged a team-best 3.4 assists per game this winter.
