'Zombies' Lurking In Cheshire
CHESHIRE, Mass. — The Selectmen are concerned about zombies at Cheshire Elementary School harassing residents in the area.
"Fair warning I am watching for zombies," Francesconi told Police Chief Tim Garner at Tuesday's Selectmen's meeting.
In truth, residents do not have to stockpile canned good or prepare to battle the undead but just have to avoid the Cheshire School grounds this week
Garner said high school students, who are currently on spring break, have been playing a game called Zombie Apocalypse, which is similar to tag. "Zombies" wear bandanas on their heads and chase the "living," who wear bandanas on their arms.
Francesconi said some people in the St. Mary's Church parking lot were chased by a convoy of trucks filled with teenagers earlier his week.
"When two adults are walking through the parking lot and are surrounded by three trucks and almost run down with a truck full of teenaged kids, to me something is wrong with whatever this zombie game is," she said.
Garner said he did not see a truck chase anyone but did have to tell the kids to stop "attacking" those who are not playing the game. He said, last weekend, a couple stopped at the church to pick up a vehicle and were swarmed.
"The kids came out started pounding on this girl's car. That is part of the game if you ever watched zombies you would understand what they are doing over there," Garner said. "I just told them to be aware of who is and who isn't involved in the game."
Garner said the kids played the same game last year during spring break and were going through yards surrounding Cheshire School. He said he told them to stay on the school's campus and they did.
Garner said he would tell the kids to stop if the selectmen wished but said they are not doing anything illegal and he felt better knowing they were contained.
"I don't mind because they are in the schoolyard in one spot instead of all over town having a party," Garner said.
Selectman Robert Ciskowski joked that because they are dealing with zombies the town cannot simply kill them – he suggested registering them through Town Hall.
On a serious note, Francesconi said if she hears one more complaint she will put an end to the game.
"If it continues to happen we need to be a little more aggressive on preventing the zombie game from happening in the Cheshire School parking lot," she said. "Citizens in town are not going to be harassed ... it is a serious thing when people really feel threatened."
On a lighter note, Garner said the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Cheshire Elementary School was well attended and it marked the 20th year the town has held the event.
