E. Richard Scholz, seen earlier Monday, said he may run for selectman again.
CHESHIRE, Mass. — Although voter turnout was low Monday, Edmund St. John IV secured enough votes to fend off competitor E. Richard Scholz.
"I am very pleased and I congratulate Dick on a great campaign and look forward to getting to work tomorrow," St. John said.
According to unofficial results, St. John received a total of 376 votes by 7 p.m. when the polls closed. Scholz was able to garner 108 votes out of the 487 ballots cast.
Voter turnout was low throughout the day with only 20 percent of the 2,389 registered voters making out to the community center to cast their ballot.
Town Clerk Christine Emerson said by 3:30, only 268 citizens had voted and she did not anticipate a huge influx of voters as the day went on.
"It's been slow … but the day is not over yet," she said.
St. John will replace selectman of 15 years Paul Astorino, who decided not to seek re-election.
Scholz has ran twice in the past: once against Astorino three years ago and again last year, narrowly losing to current Selectwoman Carol Francesconi.
Scholz said he may run again especially if the town votes to increase the select board from three to five members.
"If it doesn’t take to long to get to five selectmen, I probably will run again if I am not 102 when we get there," he said.
St. John, who previously served on the Adams-Cheshire Regional School Committee, left a vacancy on the committee that will be filled by Adam Emerson who ran unopposed.
All other seats were filled by incumbents running unopposed, including the School Committee seat vacated by St. John that was filled by Adam Emerson.
