Berkshire Force 14U Team Reaches Softball Tourney Final

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Berkshire Force 14-and-under softball team won two games on Sunday to reach the final of its two-day tournament at the Doyle Softball Complex, where the Force dropped a on-run decision to a team from New York's Capital District.
 
In its first game Sunday, an early lead helped the force defeat Greylock Thunder, 5-2.
 
The Force scored on a groundout by Jordyn Lummus in the first inning and a error in the second inning.
 
Sophia-Marie Groves earned the win, throwing six innings and allowing two runs and three hits while striking out four and walking one.
 
The Force collected 13 hits in the win. Kirsten Carrigan, Addison Lyon, and Jordyn Codding each had three hits.

An early lead again helped lift the Force.
 
Berkshire scored in the first inning on a groundout by Lummus in the first inning, a single by Lexi Sondrini, a single by Ellianna Christopher and in the second inning on a double by Taea Bramer in the second inning.
 
Addison Lyon earned the win. She went 3-2/3 innings, allowing no runs on two hits, three strikeouts and a walk.
 
The Force collected 10 hits. Bramer and Sondrini each had two.

Once again, the Force jumped out early when Addison Lyon drove in a run with a single in the first inning.
 
But the Impact battled back and scored twice in the fourth to take the lead for good.
 
The Force collected nine hits. Codding and Sondrini each had multiple hits. Lyon, Sondrini, Kirsten Carrigan, and Szophia Lewis each drove in one run.

Toy Library Installed at Onota Lake

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Feel free to use or leave a toy at Onota Lake's newest infrastructure meant to foster community and benefit kids.

Burbank Park now has a toy library thanks to Wahconah Regional High School senior Alexandra Bills. Located along the wall at the beach area, the green and blue structure features two shelves with sand toys that can be used to enhance children's visits.

The Parks Commission supported Bills' proposal in February as part of her National Honors Society individual service project and it was installed this month. Measuring about 4 feet wide and 5.8 feet tall, it was built by the student and her father with donated materials from a local lumber company.

Friends and family members provided toys to fill the library such as pails, shovels, Frisbees, and trucks.

"I wanted to create a toy library like the other examples in Berkshire County from the sled library to the book libraries," she told the commission in February.

"But I wanted to make it toys for Onota Lake because a lot of kids forget their toys or some kids can't afford toys."

Bills lives nearby and will check on the library weekly — if not daily — to ensure the operation is running smoothly.  A sign reading "Borrow-Play-Return" asks community members to clean up after themselves after using the toys.

It was built to accommodate children's heights and will be stored during the winter season.
