MCLA Volleyball Earns First Win of Year

LONGMEADOW, Mass. --  The MCLA volleyball team Saturday earned its first win of 2017 with a 3-0 win over Bay Path.
 
Brooke Queripel led the Trailblazers with 10 kills and 4 aces in the win.
 
The Trailblazers (1-5) took the match 25-20, 25-23, 25-22 over the Wildcats (2-2)
 
Queripel collected her 10 kills on 25 attacks. She also added 7 digs in the win.  
 
Maggie Allen ended with 8 kills as did fellow senior Melissa Hopkins. Tessa Sestito and Natasha Stewart each collected 9 assists, both season bests.  
 
Mele Enomoto led the defense with a team high 15 digs.
 
MCLA faced Castleton (Vt.) later on Saturday.
 
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
CASTLETON, Vt. -- The MCLA men's cross country finished second overall at the Castleton University Invitational Saturday morning.
 
Jeremiah Jones and Avery Woodbury paced the team with sevent and eighth place finishes, respectively, their second straight top 10 finishes.
 
Jones ran the 8k race in 28 minutes, 45 seconds, while Woodbury came across the line just seven seconds later.
 
Christopher Gamble finished in 13th place with a time of 29:55 for MCLA. Owen Fitzgerald and Jose Rosario rounded out the scoring for the Trailblazers.  
 
MCLA travels to Bard College next Saturday.
 
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
CASTLETON, Vt. -- The MCLA women's cross country team finished eighth tin the Castleton University invite.
 
Julie Gambill finished in eighth place to pace the Trailblazers, her second straight top 10 finish.
 
Gambill ran the 5k race in a time of 23:35 and was the lone Trailblazer to finish in the top 37. She also paced the team last weekend at the SVC invitational.
 
Kaitlin Wright finished 37th for MCLA while Jordan Daegatano was 42nd. Also competing for MCLA was Breanna Castor and Hunter Schrade.
 
MCLA goes to Bard College next Saturday.
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The visiting Colby Sawyer women's tennis team blanked the MCLA Trailblazers 9-0 Saturday afternoon in the NAC opener for both teams this afternoon.
 
The Chargers (3-0, 1-0) wasted little time taking control of this matchup.They swept through the doubles action without dropping a single game.  Their top duo of Ashley Woodside and Yashu Yang won, 8-0, over MCLA's Mariza Sfakianaki (Williamstown) and Sam Gawron.
 
CSC's Evelyn Miller and Aislinn O'Connor did the same to Brianna Higgins and Ashley Juskhas. In the third slot, Alexa Conlin and Michelle Lopes defeated Lauren Kexel and Katherine Grill, 8-0.
 
The same pattern formed in singles play. Woodside blanked Sfakianaki while Yang did the same to Gawron. Maddy Gemerek and Lauren Blanchard came off the bench to earn singles points, as did Christine Hill and Hilary Boucher. All of those matches were in straight sets.
 
MCLA (0-2, 0-1) battles Lyndon State on Wednesday.
 
WOMEN'S SOCCER
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Russell Sage's Joleen Marfone notched a goal and an assist in leading the Gators past the MCLA Trailblazers 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Shewcraft Field.
 
In the opening half, MCLA (0-2) almost broke through first when Aleah Sangiovanni's (Pittsfield) shot hit the crossbar from just outside the eighteen early on. From there, the Gators (3-1) took control and outshot MCLA 13-5 in the half.
 
Ariannah Logan pushed a thru pass forward to a streaking Marfone.  She would be behind the defense and easily slip one past MCLA keeper Megan Richardson for a 1-0 lead.
 
In the second half, the Gators tallied twice in the final 15 minutes to put the game away. In the 76th minute, Marfone ripped a shot that deflected towards teammate Kristen Silk. Silk easily got it past Richardson for a 2-0 lead.
 
Emma Augustine earned the win stopping four shots on the afternoon.  The Gators owned a commanding 28-8 shot advantage over MCLA.
 
Richardson (Adams) ended with six saves for MCLA, which hosts Castleton on Wednesday.
 
MEN'S SOCCER
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Lehman College's Ardit Belegu headed home the lone goal in the 86th minute to lift the Lightning past the host MCLA Trailblazers 1-0 Saturday afternoon in the final game of the 2017 CIAO Classic.
 
After 85 minutes of scoreless action, Lehman (2-2) finally broke through after a crazy sequence. Belegu got behind the defense and ripped a shot that hit the post. The rebound went to Adewale Adewusi, who's shot was saved by a sprawling Kamron Anderson, however the rebound went up in the air and Belegu headed it home for the game winner. The goal was his first of the season.
 
The Trailblazers (1-3) had a couple of chances late but couldn't net the equalizer. Lehman's Chris Mulholland snared a pair of saves in the win.
 
Lehman owned a commanding 26-9 shot advantage over the Trailblazers and a 9-3 edge in corners.
 
Anderson was outstanding all day collecting 10 saves, but had to absorb the loss.
 
MCLA will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts Cobleskill.
