Derek Paris and Dylen Harrison each scored nine points on Saturday to lead the Greylock seventh- and eighth-grade boys travel basketball team to a 47-33 win over Mount Everett.

"We took a different approach and gave most of our bench the majority of the minutes," Greylock coach Rick Paris said. "I was very pleased in how everyone shared the ball. This enabled all players on the team to get in the scoring column."

Thomas Martin and Seamus Barnes each scored five points in the win.

Mount Everett got a game-high 11 from Justin Foster and seven points from Tyler Duquette.

"Mount Everett is a very tall team, which worried us a bit," Rick Paris said. "They definitely controlled the boards, but we were able to use our defense speed advantage and get a bunch of steals when we pressured the ball."

Greylock started the weekend with a narrow 40-39 loss to Housatonic.

Connor Hanavan scored 17 points -- 12 on four 3-pointers -- and Caden Generok scored seven for Housy.

Derek Paris scored 22 with nine rebounds, and Dylen Harrison scored 11 for Greylock, which got four blocks and three rebounds from Henry Art.

"The first half was a tight game, ending in an 11-10 deficit for us," Rick Paris said. "In the second quarter, we had some tough inside presence from Henry Art off the bench. He had four blocks and three boards in just the second. For a first year player, he has spurts where he really gets after it. I was so happy for him."

Generok scored seven, and Hanavan hit three 3s in a pivotal third quarter, when Housatonic outscored Greylock, 24-13, to take a 35-23 lead.

Derek Paris scored 12 in the fourth to help fuel Greylock's comeback.

"We then got a turnover with about 5 or 6 seconds left, and we called an inbound play for Derek, and it all seemed to come together and he was able to get up a layup over the top of Housy’s defender, but the ball fell of the front of the rim and we were unable to get a put back and time expired," Rick Paris said.

Greylock (2-2) has four games left in its regular season. It has a non-league game on Wednesday in Bennington, Vt., against the eighth-graders from Mount Anthony Union.

Williamstown Charter Review Panel OKs Fix to Address 'Separation of Powers' Concern

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Charter Review Committee on Wednesday voted unanimously to endorse an amended version of the compliance provision it drafted to be added to the Town Charter.

The committee accepted language designed to meet concerns raised by the Planning Board about separation of powers under the charter.

The committee's original compliance language — Article 32 on the annual town meeting warrant — would have made the Select Board responsible for determining a remedy if any other town board or committee violated the charter.

The Planning Board objected to that notion, pointing out that it would give one elected body in town some authority over another.

On Wednesday, Charter Review Committee co-Chairs Andrew Hogeland and Jeffrey Johnson, both members of the Select Board, brought their colleagues amended language that, in essence, gives authority to enforce charter compliance by a board to its appointing authority.

For example, the Select Board would have authority to determine a remedy if, say, the Community Preservation Committee somehow violated the charter. And the voters, who elect the Planning Board, would have ultimate say if that body violates the charter.

In reality, the charter says very little about what town boards and committees — other than the Select Board — can or cannot do, and the powers of bodies like the Planning Board are regulated by state law.
