In the spirit of celebrating Upstate Rubdown's connection to the#namazing city of North Adams and the surrounding Northeast community, Common Folk and Bright Ideas are teaming up with us to share an "Intimate evening with Upstate Rubdown: a fundraising show" on March 30th to fundraise for the band's second album.

MAD DAWG
Madelyn Gardner has won 3 Academy Awards and was hailed as Sexiest Person Alive by People Magazine in 1985 (6 years before she was even born). You might recognize her from her breakthrough role as "the spoon" in "Shawshank Redemption."
SETH BROWN
Seth Brown is a freelance writer, poet, and comedian, who has performed around the Berkshires and beyond. He writes his award-winning humor column "The Pun Also Rises" for the Berkshire Eagle, is the author of five books, and enjoys half-price sushi at local restaurants.
RICK CONETY
Rick Conety performs clean stand-up comedy at venues all around New England and western New York. A “baby boomer,” Rick writes comedy that comes from that perspective; from dealing with elderly parents to coping with the constantly-changing modern technology. His comedy appeals to discerning adults who appreciate clever comedy without the obscenities.
In addition to college, corporate, and comedy club audiences, he also likes to bring his off-beat humor to unique venues such as churches and campgrounds, even appearing in downtown storefront windows at some of Saratoga’s “First Night” New Year’s Eve celebrations.
He especially enjoys donating his time and talent to help raise much-needed funds for non-profit organizations. He has performed for many benefits, including fundraisers for Children’s Mental Health Fund, Center for Autism, Youth and Family Services, Rape Crisis, Project Against Violent Encounters, and the American Cancer Society. |

What is music theory? Why bother learning it? If you've got the time, I've got a cheesy little explanation:
Have you ever tried to have a conversation with someone who speaks a language you don't understand? It's really hard to tell them what's going on in your head. You can't speak Norwegian, you just got to Norway! Maybe you can teach them how to cook a meal you mother always made you, but it takes forever because you just have to physically show them all the steps one by one, and you can't relay what's coming up next until you've completed the step you're on. You can't say "be careful not to burn your onions when you're cooking on high heat", you'll need to point at dials and burn your onions to exemplify your deep onion knowledge. If only you could share some phrases in common, if only you could simply say it in the abstract, then maybe things would go more smoothly.
Well that's often what happens between musicians when they're playing together. Without having a language to talk in, teaching a song you wrote to someone else means having to physically show them the notes on your guitar or piano, if you're playing a chord, you might have to show them each note one by one. This is where having a language in common will come in handy!
Instead of pointing at shapes and playing your idea to your fellow musician, you can just tell them what to play! "Hey Pete, play this here C-sharp major seven chord" "Ohhh ya sure, thanks Walt." In this case, Walt just said a few words, and Pete instantly knew what he was talking about, they could be playing the same song in no time! And even over the phone or through text! |

Join us for an all-levels community yoga class in solidarity with the students and families of March For Our Lives. All donations will go directly to Everytown for Gun Safety. Come together in solidarity, peace, and strength.
On March 24, the kids and families of March for our Lives will take to the streets of Washington, DC to demand that their lives and safety become a priority in this country. They are fighting to end gun violence and mass shootings in our schools today. This march has been organized by the extraordinary students of Parkland, Florida who are standing up for their right to be safe, and inspiring others to join them.
On the morning of March for our Lives, we will stand in solidarity with these smart and fearless students, and bow in awe of them, by coming together for what we hope will be the largest single indoor yoga gathering in the history of Berkshire County. We can fit at least 1000 yoga mats into this spectacular space. We have plenty of teachers, plenty of room, and all profits will be donated to Everytown for Gun Safety, a non profit fighting for common-sense reforms to reduce gun violence. How many will stand with us?

Sex, death, romance, magic, terror, and wonder; the night invites a myriad of often contradictory associations. For centuries, painters have been drawn to the mysteries of the night and its poetic possibilities. The Lure of the Dark features over a dozen artists who conjure the many moods of night and light that illuminate the darkness, from the moon and the stars, to candles, cigarettes, and the glow of cell phones.
Paintings of Violence (Why I am not a mere Christian) is a single installation comprised of ten paintings and one sculpture, in relationship to the sculptural assembly, Lightning with Stag in its Glare, by Joseph Beuys. In her work, Howard examines religion, mortality, and violence, specifically the more subtle kinds of “controlled violence” that are meticulously planned and calmly executed. The title is taken from two opposing polemics, Why I Am Not a Christian by Bertrand Russell and Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. |
