CHESHIRE, Mass. — The Hoosac Valley Middle and High School's Performing Arts Department will bring "The Addams Family" to the stage this weekend.

This Friday, more than 50 middle and high school students invite all to what will undoubtedly be a frightful night of laughs and music.

"We have been working on it since January," instrumental and technical director Jacob Keplinger said. "It is a very popular show in high schools right now and it looked fun."

The musical, which is based on the characters created by Charles Addams, was written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice and music was written by Andrew Lippa.

Wednesday Addams, played by Sam Sherwood, has fallen in love with Lucas Beineke, played by Jackson Keplinger. A dinner at the Addams family estate is planned so the Lucas' seemingly normal family can meet the Addams Family. This creates conflict in the Addams family with Wednesday's mom Morticia, played by Hanna Koczela, feeling conflicted over her ever-maturing daughter's newfound feelings, Wednesday's brother Pugsley, played by Doug LaDoucer, feeling ignored since Wednesday's and Lucas's relationship began and Wednesday's father Gomez, played by Aaron McAdoo simply looking to keep the family together.

Keplinger said the musical involves the entire art department and noted that this was the first time many students even heard of the Addams Family.

"Students didn't really know about it," he said. "But they really like it."

The stage direction is by Nancy Pedercini-Acquista, vocal direction is by Jonathan Rowe and cChoreography is by Sophia Acquista and Victoria Alibozek.

The musical opens Friday, March 24, at 7 p.m. at the Hoosac Valley High School auditorium. There will also be a showing Saturday at the same time.

Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Adams Sees No Races So Far

By Jack GuerinoiBerkshires Staff
ADAMS, Mass. — With less than a week left before nomination papers are due, there are currently no contested seats.

Only selectman incumbent John Duval has returned papers. Selectman Howard Rosenberg has decided not to seek re-election.

Rosenberg, who was elected in 2021, said he has chosen not to run again to make room for younger candidates.

"I feel strongly, we need younger people running for public office,  as the future of our town lies within the younger  generation. The world is so fundamentally different today and rapidly changing to become even more so. I believe we need people who are less interested in trying to bring back the past, then in paving the way for a promising future. The younger generation can know that they can stay here and have a voice without having to leave for opportunities elsewhere," he said.

The only person to return papers so far is former member the board Donald Sommer. Sommer served as a selectman from 2007 to 2010 and before that was a member of the School Committee and the Redevelopment Authority. He ran unsuccessfully for selectman in 2019 and again in 2021 but dropped out of before the election.

Incumbent Moderator Myra Wilk and Town Clerk Haley Meczywor have returned papers for their respective positions.

Assessor Paula Wheeler has returned papers and incumbents James Loughman and Eugene Michalenko have returned papers for library trustees.
