PITTSFIELD — The state Department of Transportation is kicking off construction season next week, including work on the West Housatonic Street/Center Street intersection. The project completion date is July 1, 2018, though most work should be done by Memorial Day.

Work in the first two weeks includes: drainage installation, full-depth excavation of the center of the intersection, road widening for the turning lane West Housatonic westbound onto Center Street, road widening for the turning lane on Center Street southbound onto West Housatonic, grading of turning lanes and intersection, paving of intersection and turning lanes.

Following those first two weeks, the remaining work will include: completing sidewalks and driveways, final grading of slope areas and seeding, and paving the final course the last week in May. The intersection work is expected to be substantially complete by Memorial Day Weekend, weather dependent. Temporary adjustments were made this past winter to signaling to alleviate confusion for the left turning traffic from Center Street.

MassDOT encourages drivers to be mindful of these potential impacts and recommends travelers use alternative routes in the first two weeks as work will be concentrated at the center of the intersection. Those traveling through the area should reduce speed and use caution.

The $2,372,226 project is being funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program. The design included opportunities to improve bicycle and pedestrian accommodation, intersection geometry, capacity, and regional traffic management.

Dalton Select Board Argues Over Sidewalk Article

By Sabrina DammsiBerkshires Staff
DALTON, Mass. — A heated discussion concerning sidewalks during Monday night's Select Board meeting resulted in the acting chair calling a recess to cool the situation.

The debate stemmed from the two articles on the town meeting warrant for May 6 at 7 p.m. at Wahconah Regional High School.

One proposes purchasing a sidewalk paver for $64,000 so sidewalks can be paved or repaired for less money, but they will use asphalt rather than concrete. The other would amend the town's bylaws to mandate the use of concrete for all future sidewalks.

The article on concrete sidewalks was added to the warrant through a citizen petition led by resident Todd Logan.

The board was determining whether to recommend the article when member John Boyle took the conversation in a new direction by addressing how the petition was brought about.

"I just have a comment about this whole procedure. I'm very disappointed in the fact that you [Logan] have been working, lobbying various groups and implementing this plan and filed this petition six weeks ago. You never had any respect for the Select Board and …" Boyle said.

Before Boyle could finish his statement, which was directed to Logan, who was in the audience, Chair Joe Diver called point of order via Zoom.
