Vaping Info Sessions for Parents Set at Drury, Greylock
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Like schools across the country, Drury High School and Mount Greylock Regional School have seen vaping by youth increase. To help parents understand more about this trend, the schools are partnering with Berkshire AHEC, which hosts the Berkshire Tobacco Free Community Partnership, and Northern Berkshire Community Coalition.
The Drury forum, sponsored by the North County Superintendents Drug Free Schools Group, is titled "Parenting in the Age of Vaping and Legalized Marijuana: Don't Wait to Have the Conversation." It will take place at Drury High School on Tuesday, May 15, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Pizza will be served.
The Mount Greylock event, sponsored by the MGPTO, is titled "Big Tobacco is Sweet Talking Our Kids" and will take place on Monday, May 21, at 7 p.m. at Mount Greylock Regional School. Both events are open to the public.
Joyce Brewer, manager of the Berkshire Tobacco Free Community Partnership, will be addressing parents at both events.
"Many parents do not understand that their children are becoming addicted to nicotine by using vaping devices," Brewer said. "The Juul device in particular has become a popular trend for youth and the concentration of nicotine in the vaping fluid is very high. Inhaling the vapor produced by the heated fluid is also harmful due to the chemicals contained. These devices are clearly being marketed to youth and it's important that parents be aware of the risks."
Northern Berkshire Community Coalition will be present at both events and will screen their new substance abuse prevention PSAs as well as other prevention resources for parents.
