New Doctor Named to SVMC Board of Trustees
BENNINGTON, Vt. — Southwestern Vermont Health Care has appointed Dr. Charles Salem to its Board of Trustees.
“Charles is a tremendous surgeon and a true leader among SVHC’s physicians,” said Tommy A. Harmon Jr., the board chair. “We know that his experience and point of view will contribute immensely to the board of Trustees and will have a positive effect on the entire organization.”
Salem is a general surgeon in the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center General Surgery department with more than 20 years of experience as a physician. He received his undergraduate education at Yale University in Connecticut and his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He completed his residency and internship at Maine Medical Center in Portland. He joined the SVMC medical staff in 1996. Since then, he has held many leadership positions, including as chair of the SVHC Institutional Review Board, as both president and vice president of the SVMC Medical Staff, and as a member of the Credentials Committee.
“We are grateful to have Charles join us on the Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Thomas A. Dee, SVHC’s president and CEO. “He will serve a crucial role as we continue to advance the health system’s mission to provide exceptional care and comfort to the people we serve.”
Board members are nominated by the board’s Nominating Committee and voted on by the entire board. In selecting new SVHC board members, the nominating committee looks for candidates who exemplify SVHC's values, can be counted on to actively participate in board work, and have leadership capabilities. SVHC looks for candidates who represent the communities the health system serves and have special expertise in fulfilling board duties.
