Thunder Drops into Losers' Bracket at Eastern Nationals

SALISBURY, Md. -- The Greylock Thunder 14-year-old softball team Saturday went 2-1 at the United States Specialty Soprts Association's East National Championship.
 
The Thunder won twice in the winners' bracket of their division before falling to the Albany, N.Y.,-area Electric City Bombers, 3-2, on a walk-off single.
 
In its first action on Friday, the Thunder edged the New Jersey Sparks, 5-4, behind a complete-game, eight-strikeout performance in the circle by Madi Puppolo.
 
Rylie Bishop went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs, and Puppolo and Rylyn Witek each went 2-for-4.
 
With the score tied, 4-4, after seven innings, the Thunder started the bottom of the eighth with a runner on second. She moved up on Witek's single and scored on a passed ball to end the game.
 
The Thunder then knocked off the New Jersey Heat, 4-1.
 
Puppolo doubled, and Jordyn Codding drove in a pair of runs in a four-run third inning. Ashley Bird struck out three and allowed just two hits in six innings of work in the circle.
 
Against Electric City, Puppolo struck out three, walked three and allowed just two earned runs. Bishop went 3-for-3 with a double for the Thunder.
 
But Electric City scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to come from behind and send Greylock into the losers' bracket.
 
The Thunder plays Saturday morning at 9:10 against the winner of Saturday's early game between the Saucon Valley Storm and the Connecticut Mirage.

Adams Sees No Races So Far

ADAMS, Mass. — With less than a week left before nomination papers are due, there are currently no contested seats.
 
Only selectman incumbent John Duval has returned papers. Selectman Howard Rosenberg has decided not to seek re-election. 
 
Rosenberg, who was elected in 2021, said he has chosen not to run again to make room for younger candidates.
 
"I feel strongly, we need younger people running for public office,  as the future of our town lies within the younger  generation. The world is so fundamentally different today and rapidly changing to become even more so. I believe we need people who are less interested in trying to bring back the past, then in paving the way for a promising future. The younger generation can know that they can stay here and have a voice without having to leave for opportunities elsewhere," he said.
 
The only person to return papers so far is former member the board Donald Sommer. Sommer served as a selectman from 2007 to 2010 and before that was a member of the School Committee and the Redevelopment Authority. He ran unsuccessfully for selectman in 2019 and again in 2021 but dropped out of before the election.
 
Incumbent Moderator Myra Wilk and Town Clerk Haley Meczywor have returned papers for their respective positions.
 
Assessor Paula Wheeler has returned papers and incumbents James Loughman and Eugene Michalenko have returned papers for library trustees.
