SPECTRUM:embodied activities include a ‘walking performance tour’ of the MCLA campus, open mics, work-in-progress showings, movement classes and a closing celebration at ‘the Green.' Performers include: Katy Pyle, Malcom Peacock, Rina Espiritu, J. Bouey, Aye Eckerson, Billy Dean Thomas, MCLA students and community members.

for more information                                                                                                                                          In year 10 of our 25-year exhibition, Sol LeWitt: A Wall Drawing Retrospective, “the most perfect union of contemporary art and architecture in the United States,” (Los Angeles Times) we celebrate with a series of artist talks, stories, and scholarly discussion, with a full day of activities punctuated by performances from artists whose work has been influenced by LeWitt.

In The Machine that Makes the Art? Susan Cross, Mark Haxthausen, Anna Lovatt, and other LeWitt scholars will contribute.
1:30pm: Pop-up stories and Performances in the galleries
Artists Spencer Finch, Karl Larson, Jeffrey Gibson, Sameer Gupta, Abhik Mukherjee, Barbara Takenaga, Tigue, Joe Wardwell, and LeWitt master draftsman John Hogan pop up, share stories, and present work inspired by the father of conceptualism.
7pm: Dinner and performances
Cap the day with a celebration dinner and performances by Quindar (with Wilco’s Mikael Jorgensen), and jazz impresario and MacArthur “Genius,” Jason Moran.

A Sol LeWitt treasure hunt and LeWitt-inspired art-making at the Art Bar.

Join us for the Annual Tree Lighting! On Wednesday, November 21 at 6 p.m. traffic will be routed away from the tree at Monument Square on Main St. (between the First Congregational and First Baptist Churches) where residents are asked to gather to count down the seconds until the switch is thrown and thousands of twinkling lights adorn the downtown.

As soon as Main Street lights up the Drury High School Band and Band Front will lead the way with festive songs for the North Adams Fire Department’s fire engine as it makes its way through downtown with Santa Claus. Santa and his helpers will bring gifts for the first 500 children.

This Fall - Parent Child Home Program

FREE Books and Toys for children 16 mo. to 3 years old this fall.  PCHP is a home visiting program. A trained Home Visitor will bring FREE books and toys for your child to keep.  They read, play, and do art activities with your child and you to help your child be ready to learn in school. MCLA will hold its inaugural Day of Dialogue. This is a campus-wide initiative with suspended day and evening classes to ensure full campus participation by students and faculty.  The theme of this year’s Day of Dialogue is “Complicating Race.” This event is free and open to the public.
The day will begin with an opening breakfast and welcome as participants enjoy a pancake “sundae bar” with MacDonald-Dennis and Dr. Christine Condaris, professor of music, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., in the Venable Gym. Condaris will present an opening musical piece to inspire those in attendance to listen deeply to each other.

Attendees may choose to attend one of the following morning workshops from 9:45 to 11:45 a.m., in Bowman Hall, which include “Power Up: Art as Action, Art as Dialogue,” with Melanie Mowinski, associate professor of visual art; “A Short History of Anti-Immigrant Feeling in the United States” with Dr. Ely Janis, associate professor of history; and “Multiracial Identity: Check all that Apply,” with Kayla Hollins ’12, associate director of admissions.
Also, MacDonald-Dennis and Dr. Jenna Sciuto, assistant professor of English, will screen the documentary film, “American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs,” to be followed by a discussion titled, “Reflections on a Radical: Grace Lee Boggs, Solidarity, and Political Revolution,” in the Amsler Campus Center’s Sullivan Lounge.
Following the morning workshops, participants are invited to engage in dialogue over lunch in Venable Gym, noon to 1:45 p.m.

Afternoon workshops will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. in Bowman Hall. They will include “Race, Standardized Testing, and Admissions,” with Kayla Hollins ’12, associate director of admissions, and Dean of Enrollment Management and Community Relations Gina Puc; “Afrofuturism: A Literary Exploration of a Moving Genre (and a creative writing engagement),” with Dr. Caren Beilin, assistant professor of English; and “Race, Ethnicity, and Language: Stigma, Prestige, and Power,” with Emily Alling, associate dean for library services.

In addition, “Why Representation Matters: A Conversation about the Role of Museums” will be led by Michelle Daly, director of the Berkshire Cultural Resource Center, at MCLA Gallery 51, and “Agency for People of Color in Entertainment Media,” will be presented by Assistant Director of Diversity Programs and the Multicultural Education Center Michael Obasohan ’11 and Jamal Ahamad ’11, a teacher of math and English at Taconic High School in Pittsfield, in the Sullivan Lounge in the Amsler Campus Center.

The Day of Dialogue will conclude with the Eighth Annual Michael S. and Kitty Dukakis Public Policy Lecture, with best-selling author, journalist, and comic book writer Ta-Nehisi Coates.

Ta-Nehisi Coates has emerged as one of the most important voices of our time. His powerful writing combines reportage, historical analysis, and personal narrative to address some of America’s most complex and challenging issues pertaining to culture and identity. Called “essential, like water or air,” by A.O. Scott of The New York Times, his 2015 book, Between the World and Me, was a #1 New York Times bestseller and winner of the National Book Award and the NAACP Image Award. His most recent book, We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy, is a collection of his essays on the Obama presidency and its aftermath.
Ta-Nehisi Coates grew up in West Baltimore and attended Howard University. He currently lives in New York with his wife and son, and is a Distinguished Writer in Residence for New York University’s Carter Journalism Institute.

This spellbinding stage version of Edgar Allan Poe’s masterpiece is written and directed by Arthur Yorinks and Jim Simpson and features a score by Philip Glass, adapted from the House of Usher opera that Glass and Yorinks created in 1988. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A MEMBER OF ANY ORGANIZATION. IN CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER, THE CEREMONY WILL BE HELD AT THE AMERICAN LEGION.
The parade begins at the American Legion and travels north to turn down Main Street, moves east up Main Street to Eagle Street, then turns north again to travel along Eagle Street and conclude at the Veterans Memorial Park for the ceremony.

Clarksburg Sees Race for Select Board Seat

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — The town will see a three-way race for a seat on the Select Board in May. 
 
Colton Andrews, Seth Alexander and Bryana Malloy returned papers by Wednesday's deadline to run for the three-year term vacated by Jeffrey Levanos. 
 
Andrews ran unsuccessfully for School Committee and is former chairman of the North Adams Housing Authority, on which he was a union representative. He is also president of the Pioneer Valley Building Trades Council.
 
Malloy and Alexander are both newcomers to campaigning. Malloy is manager of industrial relations for the Berkshire Workforce Board and Alexander is a resident of Gates Avenue. 
 
Alexander also returned papers for several other offices, including School Committee, moderator, library trustee and the five-year seat on the Planning Board. He took out papers for War Memorial trustee and tree warden but did not return them and withdrew a run for Board of Health. 
 
He will face off in the three-year School Committee seat against incumbent Cynthia Brule, who is running for her third term, and fellow newcomer Bonnie Cunningham for library trustee. 
 
Incumbent Ronald Boucher took out papers for a one-year term as moderator but did not return them. He was appointed by affirmation in 2021 when no won ran and accepted the post again last year as a write-in.
