NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The MCLA softball team featured a balanced offensive attack and held late leads in both games but was unable to hold on as it was swept by Albertus Magnus on Saturday afternoon.

 

MCLA fell to 2-10 and returns to action Sunday as they visit Rhode Island College for a pair of nonconference contests.

 

Albertus Magnus 5, MCLA 4

MCLA would open up the scoring in Game One with four runs in the top of the 2nd. With the bases loaded a Kaitlyn Berghela single drove in a pair of runs and teammate Kayla Baker would follow with a two-RBI single of her own.  

 

Through 4-2/3 innings Trailblazer pitcher Kara Adams held Albertus at bay conceding just one hit and no runs. However a two-out triple by Kayla Resto and RBI single by Jess Stettinger cracked the damn and put the Hawks on the board.

 

Albertus drew within one an inning later after manufacturing a pair of runs in the bottom of the 6th.

 

In the seventh, Hawk pitcher Laura Anderson drove in Stettinger from third to tie the game. Following a walk and a Kristin Cunning base hit, Anderson scored from second to give Albertus the win.

 

MCLA's Kaitlyn Berghela and Kayla Baker each had two RBIs and Erika Quackenbush had two hits.

 

Adams (0-6) took the loss for the Trailblazers.

 

Albertus Magnus 4, MCLA 3

Albertus struck first in Game Two as a Laura Anderson triple and an errant throw gave the Hawks the early 1-0 lead.

 

MCLA responded in the third with three runs of their own. A two out Kaitlyn Berghela double and Kayla Baker single tied the game at one. After another single by Erika Quackenbush, Kaylyn Holliday drove in two more runs giving the Trailblazers a 3-1 lead after three.

 

A Kayla Resto single in the fourth and an Anderson double in the fifth each drove in a run and tie the game at 3-3.

 

In the top of the sixth, MCLA put runners on first and second with no outs but were derailed by an untimely double play. Still the Trailblazers continued to grind and managed to load the bases but were ultimately unsuccessful bringing in the go ahead run.

 

It was Resto again who singled in Kayla Gosselin to give Albertus the lead in the bottom of the sixth with no outs. MCLA turned a double play and Samantha Feinstein recorded her third strikeout to keep the deficit at one.

 

Despite a leadoff single by Berghela in the top of the seventh, the Trailblazers were unable to score the tying run.

 

Baker and Holliday (2 RBIs) each had two hits. Feinstein (2-4) went the distance in the circle and took the loss for MCLA.
