CHESHIRE, Mass. — Nearly the entire town is without power after a thunderstorm swept through the area bringing high winds and heavy rain.

The Police Department is reporting that the winds knocked down several trees on the eastern fringe of the town. These trees brought wires down and currently four utility poles need to be replaced.

"At this time there are several trees and wires down. If you have no power, it will be a while before it is restored," the department posted on its Facebook page.

The East Main Street and the Furnace Hill area is currently closed to traffic while National Grid makes repairs.

National Grid reported on that out of its1,672 customers in Cheshire, 1,342 have been affected by the damage. Most of the power had been restored by 4:30, with about 100 customers still out in Cheshire and a handful in Lanesborough. Full restoration was expected by 6:45 p.m.

The National Weather Service warned of damaging winds reaching 60 mph as the storm moved through the Berkshires between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. Residents were cautioned to move away from exterior walls and prepare for "torrential" rain and hail.
