Pittsfield Jogger Struck by SUV, Taken to Baystate

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A jogger was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield on Thursday after been struck by a sport utility vehicle. 
 
Police say Lawrence Towne, 58, of Pittsfield was running south on Valentine Road when he was struck by a northbound Honda CRV operated by Kayla Karlson, also of Pittsfield. 
 
Karlson was not injured but police say Towne was taken first to Berkshire Medical Center and then to Baystate because of the serious nature of the injuries he sustained. 
 
The incident occurred at about 11:51 a.m. on Thursday in the 800 block of Valentine Road. Police, fire and County Ambulance responded to the scene. 
 
The accident remains under investigation by the Traffic Unit. Anyone who witnessed the accident or the actions of the Honda prior to the accident is asked to contact Officer David Hallas at 1-448-9700, Ext. 560. 
     

Pittsfield Police Make Arrest in Friday Shooting

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A city man was arrested Friday afternoon after a shooting just after noontime that wounded him and another man. 
 
Dane Kessler, 27, was arrested shortly after police responded to a Shot Spotter activation in the area of Francis Avenue and discovered evidence of a shooting along and recovered a loaded firearm.
 
Witnesses in the area had also contacted police. Police say preliminary investigation showed that at least two parties were most likely firing at one another. 
 
While processing the scene, investigating officers said they learned that a 26-year-old Pittsfield man had arrived at Berkshire Medical Center with gunshot wounds. Officers then located Kessler and placed him under arrest for his involvement in the shooting. At that time, Kessler indicated that he had been shot in the leg, and officers transported him to BMC for treatment. 
 
The wounds to Kessler and the other man are not believed to be life threatening.
 
Kessler is charged with carrying a firearm without a license, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, and assault with a dangerous weapon (firearm).

Pittsfield Police Seeking Information on BHS Burglars


PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Police are seeking the public's assistance with in what they are describing as a "somewhat unusual investigation."
 
According to a press release: 
 
Over one month ago, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, two individuals entered a property owned and operated by Berkshire Health Systems and stole a number of computers. The two men appeared to be comfortable in their setting and spent a considerable amount of time inside of the property. 
 
They appeared to be knowledgeable about computers and were looking for specific items to take. Both suspects appeared to be thin or athletic white males, and they had a dog on a leash accompanying them during the burglary.
 
Suspect No. 1 appeared to have dark hair with a short beard and he wore eyeglasses. He was wearing a baseball cap, dark Nike sweat shirt, dark pants and sneakers. He had a dark backpack, possibly Northface brand.
 
Suspect No. 2 appeared to have lighter hair and was clean shaven. Early in the burglary he wore a bandana or something similar on his head and a dark Northface jacket. He later took off the head covering and jacket and was wearing a white T-shirt.
 
The dog appeared to be a smaller terrier with mostly black fur, thin (probably 40 pounds or less) with a tail that curved upward.

Pittsfield Police Investigating 2 Shooting Incidents

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Police Department is investigating two shooting incidents that occurred in the city Sunday night and early Monday morning.
 
On Sunday 5/24/2020 at approximately 8:47pm, 
 
Officers responded Sunday night at about 8:47 to Francis Avenue near the intersection of Bradford Street for a ShotSpotter activation. It was later discovered that a residence there had been struck by gunfire. No injuries were reported and the incident remains under investigation at this time.
 
Then at 12:49 a.m. Monday, there was a second ShotSpotter activation at the intersection of Second Street and Lincoln Street. Upon their arrival, officers observed an unoccupied vehicle that had been struck by gunfire. Shell casings were discovered nearby. No injuries were reported and the incident remains under investigation at this time.

Motor Vehicle Crash, Shooting Leads to Arrest in Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A motor vehicle accident that lead to a shooting resulted in the arrest of a Springfield man on Thursday night. 
 
Police say the incident occurred at about 10:05 p.m. when multiple units responded to the report of shots fired in the area of Palmer's Variety, located at 221 Elm St. There was some type of altercation that included two vehicles, one of which crashed. According to independent eyewitnesses, a passenger in one of the vehicles then fired multiple rounds at the other vehicle. 
 
Damage consistent with gunfire was observed on the victim's vehicle. A handgun and ammunition were later discovered a short distance away from the shooting. No significant injuries were reported.
 
William Hennessey, 27, of Springfield was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, carrying a firearm without a license, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges against Hennessey and others may be forthcoming.
