Steven Murphy, 56

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Steven A. Murphy, 56, of Williamstown died on Thursday, January 9, 2020, at Williamstown Commons.

Steven was born on July 3, 1963, in Hoboken, N.J., to Marise (Hodgkins) LaPorte. He attended Westfield State College as a music major with a concentration in voice. He sang in professional choruses, such as Cape Cod Chorale, Master Singers of Milwaukee, Bel Canto of Milwaukee, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Santa Barbara Choral Society. He also soloed in numerous events along the way. He started in radio broadcasting at Barnstable High School, continued in college and on Cape Cod, WFCC, WQRC, then moved on to WBACH in Gloucester/Beverly, Mass., followed by 10 years at WFMR of Milwaukee and KDB Classical in Santa Barbara, Calif. Steven was a nationally syndicated classical radio host for the world classical network as well.

Steven served on more than 20 Faith Alive Team weekends (now known as, Faith Encouragement.org.) to encourage church renewal. He and his wife, Melanie shared their faith journeys, Kingdom building in His name.

Besides his mother, Steven leaves his beloved wife, Melanie T. (Towne) Murphy, whom he married on August 30, 1986; a son, Dana Murphy; two daughters, Jenni Murphy and Alys Cannon and her husband, Caleb, with Steve’s grandson due in February 2020; his siblings Richard Hoxey and his wife, Rose, Molly Tannatt and her husband, Dana Tannatt, and Thomas W. Murphy III; his father- and mother-in-law David and Nancy Towne; and more than 60 Murphy cousins in the Detroit area.

He was predeceased by his brother Mark Hoxey; stepfather Richard LaPorte; and his father, Thomas W. Murphy II.

Funeral notice: Services for Steven will take place in March at St. Boniface in Mequon, Wisc., and a local memorial service at Williamstown First Baptist Church will be held mid to late April. Donations in Steven’s memory may be made to Faith Encouragement.org, Williamstown First Baptist Church, and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Williamstown, Pop Cares, Wounded Warrior Project or other Veteran’s charity of your choice.
