NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Mohawk football team spoiled Senior Day for Drury as it defeated the Blue Devils, 23-7, in a hard fought battle Saturday afternoon.

It was a tough start to the game for Drury (4-3) who couldn’t really find themselves any room to run. After a quick turnover on downs they gave the ball over to Mohawk, which was firing on all cylinders. With an equal mixture of running and throwing, Mohawk (4-3) was able to break down the Drury defense and find itself on the board first with a 8-yard strike in the air.

Mohawk’s defense continued to cause trouble for Drury on the ground and they eventually got the ball back after a big stop around the 50 yard-line. Mohawk continued its success and went right back to the air game for another touchdown. Mohawk threw for more than 100 yards and rushed for 157. It was a difficult day trying to figure out which part of the offense to stop as both were clicking all day.

“I give them credit, they ran and threw the ball well. It’s tough, it’s unusual for high school but they did that well.” Drury coach Al Marceau said. “Our secondary has been a strength and I thought we played a bend don’t break until the last touchdown.”

Drury went into the break down, 14-0, and looked for any momentum they could get coming into the second half. On the opening kickoff they got exactly that, a forced fumble inside the visitors’ territory. With the short field, Drury was able to connect on a Keegan Vidal touchdown throw to Dante Woodson from twenty yards out to bring them within a score. Mohawk answered right back with a nice long drive  that saw them pick up a first down on a 4th-and-long to keep the drive going. Eventually it pounded the ball on the ground for their first rushing touchdown of the game.

Things got a little sloppy in the fourth quarter with both teams turning the ball over. Drury intercepted the ball down near the goalline but was sacked in the end zone for a safety, putting this game to bed. A consolation came right at the end of the game with a blocked field goal for Drury, but it was too little too late as the clock ticked away.

Drury coming into the season with some younger pieces will look to continue their optimistic season next year in hopes of keeping the winning spirit alive.

“Basically our whole line is coming back,” Marceau said. “We have Seth [Schultheis] at fullback and Louis [Guillotte], If we hit the weight room and do what we need to do we should be OK.”

Drury finds out Sunday who it will play in the first of two weeks of play for non-playoff qualifiers.
