ATHOL,Mass — The Drury football team fell to Athol, 33-6, in its season opener Friday night.  The Blue Devils scored on its opening drive to take the lead 6-0 but struggled the rest of the game as Athol put up 33 unanswered points.

Seniors Jake DiLego and Nolan Bird were fighting for the starting quarterback duties and the coaching staff went with DiLego due to his experience from last season.  Bird took over as quarterback for Drury in the second half.

Senior captain Jose Melendez, who moved from quarterback last season to running back this season, looked good in his debut carrying the ball 20 times for 121 yards and a touchdown.

Drury will look to learn from its mistakes on Saturday when they play at Taconic at 1:30 p.m.
