GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. -- The Pope Francis boys soccer team advanced past Monument Mountain and into the Division 4 State Quarter-Finals with a 4-2, penalty kick shootout win on Tuesday night.

Dennis Penny scored in the fifth minute of play with an assist from Tai McBride to give the Spartans an early lead.

They held it until the 76th minute, when Bryce Russ scored for the Cardinals to knot the game and force overtime.

After 20 more minutes, the game remained tied, and the teams went to the shootout.

Tenth-seeded Pope Francis earned a trip to the quarters against either No. 2 Easthampton or Blackstone Valley, who play on Wednesday.
