NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Drury’s Reece Racette scored two goals in Friday’s 2-1 win over Mount Everett.

The first was all speed. The second was all savvy.

And both show why the Racette and Blue Devils (4-2) are a team to be reckoned with this fall.

Late in the first half, Racette made a supporting run up the right side and was in the right place at the right time when Jon Boland’s initial shot was stopped by Patrick Silk (11 saves).

Racette put back the rebound to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Then late in the second half, Racette made a run on the right wing and eluded two defenders before slipping a shot inside the far post to give Drury the lead for good.

“Reece -- last year was his first year playing varsity soccer,” Drury coach John Jacobbe said. “He’s got a year under his belt, and he knows how to play the game.

“He’s going to get chances or he’s going to be a guy other teams have to look for.”

So far this fall, Racette has converted eight of his chances to lead the Blue Devils in goals. But Drury also has five goals from Boland and three apiece from Max Daugherty and Connor Clark.

“We’ve got JB [Boland], who has battled a couple of injuries, and he’s getting his bearings,” Jacobbe said. “And then we have other guys who can score, especially when the other team focuses on those two.”

Mount Everett (3-1) responded to the one-goal half-time deficit with a goal in the 44th minute.

Jack Carpenter started the play with a cross from the right wing into the box on a restart. Cavan Brady headed the ball home to make it 1-1.

The Blue Devils, who got six saves from Corbin Rumbolt, outshot Mount Everett by a margin of 7-4 in the second half, but the seventh shot was the biggest, Racette’s game-winner with 4 minutes, 18 seconds on the clock at John J. DelNegro Field.

The victory gives Drury a leg up in its quest to defend last year’s Berkshire County Southern Division crown. A year ago, the Eagles were a thorn in Drury’s side, going 0-1-2 against the Blue Devils.

“We respect the heck out of Mount Everett,” Jacobbe said. “We played three tough games with them last year. We knew today was going to be a tough game, and it was.

“It’s a tough game when you give up a goal to start the second half so it’s 1-1 for 30 minutes. To find a way to get one in the last 10, you’ve got to feel good about that.”

Drury hosts Mohawk on Monday before battling Berkshire South foe Hoosac Valley on Tuesday night in Adams.

Mount Everett hosts Taconic on Tuesday.
