CHESHIRE, Mass. — The Hoosac Valley boys' soccer team hung tough with Monument Mountain for half the game, but a penalty-kick goal by senior Ian Akers shortly after halftime was the turning point in the Spartans' 3-0 win on the road.

The Hurricanes (4-5-1) did their best to stay in the game despite being outshot 11-0 in the match. Akers' goal nine minutes into the second half was the break Monument needed, however, leading to two more tallies later in the game. Senior Nick Masiero added another goal seven minutes later before junior Jason Laramee finished the scoring in the 67th minute of play.

Spartans' goalie Aaron House didn't have to make a save to earn his sixth shutout of the season. Monument returns to action on Saturday with a home game against Mount Everett at 11 a.m.

Hoosac, which is currently stuck in a three-game losing streak, will try to find its way back into the win column on Saturday when they play at Wahconah at 1 p.m.
