WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- With leading scorer Jesse Foehl still out an ankle injury, the Mount Greylock boys' soccer team is

going to need someone else on the front line to step up and score some goals if the top-seeded Mounties want to advance far in the Division 2 Western Mass. tournament.

On Tuesday, that person was freshman Ian Brink, who slammed a shot home in the 77th minute to seal up Greylock's 2-0 quarterfinal win over eighth-seeded Wahconah. The Mounties improved their record to 15-0-3 with the win and earned a date against fourth-seeded Monument Mountain in the WMass. semifinals on Thursday. The Spartans also advanced on Tuesday thanks to a 2-1 overtime win over twelfth-seeded Southwick.

'It was great to see Ian score a big goal," Greylock head coach Blair Dils said. "[Eighth-grader] Benni McComish had done great work on the right flank and played a ball all the way across the box to Alex [White] on the left. Ian moved into a good scoring position at the top of the box, Alex fed him the ball, and Ian hit a firm shot that deflected with pace up and over the goalkeeper. I was pleased to see him take the opportunity to hit a hard shot on goal from his position."

Brink's fourth goal of the year clinched the Mounties third win over the Warriors (8-7-3) this season. Junior goalkeeper Sean Houston earned his third shutout of the year over Wahconah and ninth overall by making six saves. He also received some help from senior captain Ryan Mahar, who led a Greylock defensive unit that faced some sticky situations at times on Tuesday night.

"There was a frantic quality tonight that took away from the aesthetic of the game, but we're obviously not going to complain too much with the result," Dils said. "Wahconah played a much more up-tempo, impassioned game than when we met them in the regular season. With their speed up top, they're always a threat to score a counter-attacking goal. We had a few nervous moments in the back but, overall, the back four plus Sean stood strong."

The Mounties took control of the match early on, outshooting the Warriors 7-1 in the first half alone. White cashed in on one those shots in the 20th minute, calmly heading the ball into the open part of the net on a set piece. The play started with senior defender Nick Carson playing a long ball to the back post. Classmate Tom Dils got his head and shoulder on it and redirected the ball to the near post, where White was standing there ready to put it in.

Greylock must now set its sights on Monument, which they play at Wahconah High School at 7 p.m. on Thursday night. The Mounties already have two wins over the Spartans this year, a 1-0 win in the second game of the year and 2-0 victory three weeks ago, but Dils knows his team has its work cut out for it against a squad that has gone 11-3-3 this season.

"The Monument game will be a battle," he said. "They're well organized and create many turnovers in the midfield. We're looking forward to taking them on for the third time. It should be a great game."
