Taconic Continues to have Drury's Number

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Despite collecting wins against every other South Division opponent this season, the Drury boys' soccer team just can't find an answer for Taconic, which beat Drury 6-3 on the road on Monday to complete the season sweep between the two teams.

The Blue Devils (4-7-2) are now 4-2 in South Division play, with both losses coming against the Braves (5-7-4). What's even harder for Drury head coach Greg Caproni to swallow is the way his team has gotten beat. In two games against Taconic, the Devils have been outscored by a total of 11-4.

"Taconic just has out number this year," Caproni said. "Their team plays so well against us, and we not so much against them. Both teams had trouble keeping up with each other team's forwards today. Again, we had to adjust and figure out what to do in the back and middle of our lineup with key injuries still holding us back. Taconic did a great job of seeing our weakness and exploiting them."

Drury got off to a good start and an even better finish, but the Braves certainly controlled the middle of the game by scoring five straight goals between the first and second half. Senior captain Jake Tietgens got the Blue Devils on the board first, tracking down a ball sent over the top by junior Ryan Ouimet and scoring past Taconic goalkeeper Forrest Luscier (six saves).

The Braves went on a serious run after that, however, scoring five straight times on a hat trick by Dominic Nda and goals by Eamon Connor and Mike Connors. When Nda scored his third goal of the game off of a bad punt by Drury freshman keeper Cameron Lesure (five saves), Taconic had opened up a 5-1 lead with less than 15 minutes to play.

Tietgens tried to rally his team back, scoring twice in the final 13 minutes of play, but the Blue Devils' hole was just too steep to climb out of. Tietgens first scored off a breakaway in the 69th minute and then knocked in a direct kick by Ouimet with one and a half minutes left in the game. Tietgens raised his team-leading goal total to 17 in the loss, while Ouimet collected his fourth assist in the past two games.

Drury next plays at Mount Everett at 4:15 p.m. on Friday.
