Blue Devils have Down Day in Loss to Eagles

SHEFFIELD, Mass. -- Maybe it was the long bus ride down to Sheffield or the brutal rainy/snowy mix that showered the field all day, but something just wasn't right with the Drury boys' soccer team on Thursday. Mount Everett was happy to take advantage of an off performance by the Blue Devils, scoring three times in the first half on its way to a 5-2 win at home.

"This game was played in rainy/snowy mix on a U12-sized field," Drury head coach Greg Caproni said. "This basically took us right out of our game. We were not able to utilize our spead on such a small field. It was just a bad day for us."

The Blue Devils (4-8-2) had just beaten the Eagles (7-8-2) by the same score nine days ago, but it was Everett which turned out to be the better finishing team in the rematch. Sage Angell put the hosts up 1-0 in the 11th minute, but Drury senior Jake Tietgens quickly answered back five minutes later, knocking in a pass from junior Jacob Groves, who set up the play by dribbling all the way to end line and sending a cross in front of the goal.

The game most likely turned in the Eagles' favor in the 23rd minute, when sweeper Robby Parsons cleared a ball out of the midfield into the Blue Devils' end. The ball took a high bounce over Drury goalie Cameron Lesure's head and fell into the back of the net. It was tough blow for the Devils, and Everett later increased its lead to 3-1 on Nick Joyce's tally with just over two minutes left before halftime.

Drury came out flat in the second half, allowing Demitri Casivant's first goal of the season just 19 seconds into the second half. Groves made the score 4-2 by scoring off of a feed from eighth-grader Logan Rumbolt in the 50th minute, but the Eagles quieted the rally with a strike from Alek Blume 11 minutes later

Lesure finished with nine saves on the day, while Colby Reuger made 14 stops for Everett.

The Blue Devils have two more games remaining, a home game against Monument Mountain on Monday and a road game at Lee on Wednesday. The game against the Wildcats is particularly important in deciding which team will finish second in the South Division standings and earn a berth in the Western Mass. tournament.

It all comes down to Wednesday against Lee at their home field," Caproni said. "We win, we are in, but if we lose, we go home. It wouldn't be Drury soccer if it didn't come down to the last game of the season."
