Greylock Finds a Way Past Hoosac

CHESHIRE, Mass. — The Hoosac Valley boys’ soccer team lost to Mount Greylock 1-0 on Tuesday but, although the Hurricanes dropped their first game of the year, they have to be encouraged by the progress they’ve made in just three games playing for new head coach Camilo Bermudez.

Last season, Hoosac (2-1) lost a pair of games to the Mounties (2-0) by a combined score of 18-1. Bermudez had his team ready to play on Tuesday, however, and held the dynamic Greylock offense to just one goal the entire game. Senior Nathan Majumder found the side paneling off a through ball from freshman Benni McComish in the ninth minute of play, giving the Mounties the win in a game in which they held a 24-1 advantage in shots.

"Camilo brought out a good game plan today," Greylock head coach Blair Dils said. "Hoosac packed it in, tried to destroy the game and, for the most part, they were very successful. They obviously know what they’re doing this year, and I think they’ll be very tough to beat in the South."

Hurricanes’ goalie Tom Galisa was tough to beat on Tuesday, allowing the one goal to Majumder and making 12 saves throughout the game. It was a standout effort, considering the number of shots he faced and the four corner kicks he encountered on the day.

"[Galisa] was very good," Dils said. "He made a series of tough saves in the second half. We’re disappointed we didn’t poke through a second or third goal, but we obviously can’t complain about the result. We’ll move on quickly and start focusing on Friday’s match."

Senior keeper Sean Houston needed to make just one save to earn his second shutout of the season for the Mounties. Classmate Jonah Majumder was even more crucial, anchoring Greylock’s backline and limiting Hoosac’s counter-attack attempts.

"Hoosac gave us a soccer problem to solve today, and I think we did some good things to try to solve the problem, even though we only scored the one goal. We brought players forward in unique ways for us, which will serve us well in future matchups."

The Mounties next host St. Joe’s at 4 p.m. on Friday, while the ’Canes play at Lenox at 7 p.m. on the same day.
