Greylock Wins Close Game with Lee

LEE, Mass. — The Lee defense was certainly up to the challenge, but in the end a first-half goal by senior Nathan Majumder was enough for the Mount Greylock boys' soccer team to remain undefeated and earn a 1-0 win on the road on Friday.

Majumder collected his 10th goal of the season on an unassisted strike 12 minutes into the game. It was one of the few opportunities the Mounties (7-0) had in a first half where they were outshot 7-3.

"Lee played us very hard defensively," Greylock head coach Blair Dils said. "They used a high offside line that gave us trouble and reduced our scoring chances. We did a better job against the trap in the second half but couldn't capitalize on several good, easy finishes.

"This season we either finish with a flourish with high-level goals or we struggle, as we did today and at Hoosac earlier in the year. We need to do a better job of being more consistent from game to game."

The Mounties increased their level of play in the second half, earning a 9-2 edge in shots after the break. Goalkeeper Heamon Williams made five of his saves after halftime, though, keeping the Wildcats (4-4-1) firmly in the match. Senior defender Jonah Majumder played a big role in keeping Lee off the scoreboard, while goalie Sean Houston finished with three stops to earn his fourth shutout of the year.

"Lee counterattacked well, but our back line was up to the challenge," Dils said. "Sean was never seriously challenged today despite their high number of shots toward the goal. While we like to win every game 4-0, that's simply not going to happen against good teams that commit to defending the way Lee did today. We're happy with the result, however, considering we were on the road and in poor weather conditions."

Greylock resumes play on Tuesday with a home game against Hampden Charter School of Science at 4 p.m.
