Hoosac Boys Roll in Bermudez's Debut

CHESHIRE, Mass. — The Hoosac Valley boys' soccer team found itself on the wrong side of a bunch lopsided scores last season. On Tuesday, however, the Hurricanes served notice that this is a new year, cruising past Hampden Charter School of Science for an 8-0 win at home.

Playing in its first-ever varsity match, Hampden took a little too long to find its legs, turning the ball over too often and allowing Hoosac the chance to score seven times in the first half alone. Sophomore David Haley got the hosts on the board in the ninth minute, taking a pass from senior Nick Ryan and beating the keeper for the first of his two goals on the day. Haley scored again a minute later on a feed by junior Sean Ryan-Kut, who then blew the game open by scoring two goals of his own over the next four minutes.

Junior midfielder Shaun Knapp assisted on both of Ryan-Kut's tallies and later added a goal of his own to make the score 5-0 in the 16th minute. That was more than enough for new Hurricanes' head coach Camilo Bermudez to earn his first victory with the team. A comfortable lead at halftime allowed Bermudez to empty his bench in the second half, and the Hoosac reserves responded by earning a 7-1 edge in shots after the break.

Led by junior Matt Waltermire, the 'Canes defense played tight defense throughout the game, allowing senior goalie Tom Galisa (six saves) to earn the shutout in net. Hoosac will a much tougher opponent on Thursday, however, when it travels to rival Drury for a 4 p.m. matchup
