Hoosac Ties Lee, Clinches South Division Title
10:43AM / Sunday, October 28, 2012
CHESHIRE, Mass. -- The Hoosac Valley boys' soccer team was hoping to avenge its only loss in South Division play on Thursday. The Hurricanes had to settle for a 2-2 tie with Lee but weren't too depressed about it considering a draw meant they clinched the South Division title.
Hoosac (8-5-2) finishes league play with 13 points, meaning St. Joe's will finish in second place even if it defeats Drury in the Crusaders' final South Division game on Friday. After clinching a playoff spot against the Blue Devils on Monday, the vastly improved Hurricanes, who went 1-13-2 last season, took another step forward by winning its division on Thursday.
To do that, Camilo Bermudez's club had to earn a point against the only team to defeat Hoosac in league play this season. The Wildcats (6-6-3) certainly pushed the hosts hard, coming up with two game-tying goals in the second half. After junior Shaun Knapp gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead early in the first half, Lee eventually tied it on junior John Graziano's goal 10 minutes into the second half.
The match was very even, with the Wildcats earning a 15-12 edge in shots. Senior Nick Ryan answered Graziano's goal three minutes later, however, giving the lead back to the hosts. Hoosac goalie Tom Galisa (10 saves) came up with some big stops to preserve his team's lead, but Lee senior Jake LePrevost eventually netted the equalizer with five minutes left to play.
The 'Canes close out the regular season with game at Taconic at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
