Ryan-Kut's Goal Gives Hoosac its First Win

LEE, Mass. -- After eight straight games filled with more than enough frustrations, the Hoosac Valley boys' soccer team can finally celebrate its first win of the 2011 season.

Sophomore midfielder Sean Ryan-Kut took a pass from senior Chris Stefanik and drilled a shot from 25 yards out with five minutes remaining to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 win at Lee on Tuesday. Not only was it Hoosac's first win of the season, but it was also the first victory under first-year head coach Nate Girard.

"After a hard-fought, back-and-forth game with many chances for both teams, we were able to put one in with five minutes remaining in the game," Girard said. "The field was shortened up considerably because both defenses kept it that way. There were a ton of offsides calls, showing how aggressive the defenses were playing. After we missed on one opportunity, Chris found Sean with a beautiful pass that proved to be enough.

"We had additional players injured and only had two subs the entire game after a collision in our box. We now hope to build from today's game."

Girard said the win wouldn't have been possible without the efforts of senior defender Dylan Hilchey and junior goalie Tom Galisa, who made 14 saves to earn his first win and first shutout of the year.

"I have to give credit to Tom," Girard said. "After a shaky start this year and some tough losses, Tom really held it together. He has gained confidence in his ability to control a game's pace and also control the ball in the back. He remained in position for 80 minutes and really kept Lee out of the net. They had many chances on corner kicks as well as 1-on-1's with the goalie and just couldn't convert."

Heamon Williams collected seven saves for the Wildcats (4-6-1). Hoosac, which is now 1-7-1 after the win, next hosts Taconic for a 6 p.m. game at Renfrew Field on Thursday.
