WORCESTER — Grant Raphael scored with 11 minutes left to cap a two-goal comeback and give the Mount Greylock boys soccer team a 4-3 win over Worcester North on Saturday.

 

Raphael converted an assist from David Majetich for a goal from well outside the 18-yard box. It was Raphael's second goal of the game and gave the Mounties (5-1-1) their second straight win.

 

Mount Greylock coach Blair Dils fittingly called the match "a wild one," on a day that saw his team go down 2-0 in the first 10 minutes and score three times in the span of 15 minutes, finished off by Raphael's blast.

 

"Grant Raphael had another outstanding game today," Dils said. "He made a great through-run on the first goal, and his game winner with 11 minutes left was an absolute bomb from 33 yards out that very few keepers would have been able to handle.

 

"I was very pleased with the way the boys responded to adversity today. We got down by two goals twice but we refused to relent. Scoring three goals in the final 15 minutes on the road to overcome a two-goal deficit is a rare feat."

 

Raphael's first goal midway through the first half cut a 2-0 Worcester North lead in half, but the hosts scored a third goal early in the second half to re-establish their margin.

 

Then eighth-grader Sam Dils scored twice in a span of 12 minutes -- first on a volley from Ian Brink and then on a set piece.

 

"Despite his youth, Sam [Dils] is doing a great job of putting himself in positions to score," Blair Dils said. "Both of his goals were a case of his putting himself in the right position to finish with one touch. He continues to learn each week and become a key part of the offense."

 

Cal Filson made three saves in the Mounties' goal. Mount Greylock goes back on the road but inside the county on Tuesday when it visits Wahconah for a game under the lights.

 

"Taking two points against a division 1 Central Mass opponent gets us two points closer to qualifying for the tournament and it will help improve our seed, should we qualify," Dils said. "We have a string of very challenging games in front of us so we'll take the points when we can get them, especially on the road."
