LENOX, Mass. — Three different players scored second-half goals, and the Mount Greylock boys soccer team attained one of its goals with a 3-0 win over Lenox on Tuesday.

 

"We clinched a playoff berth this evening, which was goal No. 1 of the season," Mounties coach Blair Dils said. "I hear the Greylock girls team also got in the tourney as well, so it's good to see both programs moving in the right direction."

 

Ian Brink broke a scoreless tie in the 58th minute with an assist from Benni McCommish. The big junior back's second goal of the season came on one of Mount Greylock's 10 corner kicks.

 

"Ian's goal was a matter of being in the right place at the right time," Dils said. "He's a big target and we were able to get the ball to his feet on the corner kick that led to the goal."

 

Dan Flynn cashed in a rebound moments later to give the Mounties (8-3-2) a 2-0 lead. Then in the 65th minute, Eric Hirsch set up Grant Raphael for his seventh goal this season.

 

"Grant's goal was the prettiest of the night as Lenox gave him too much space, and he was able to curl a ball up and over the keeper," Dils said.

 

Dils said the Millionaires were much improved from the team's meeting in the first game of the season, a 5-1 decision for Mount Greylock.

 

Backs like Brink and David Majetich kept the pressure off Mount Greylock goalkeeper Cal Filson, who still made the one save he needed to preserve his second shutout of the year.

 

"As important as scoring three in the second half was getting the shutout," Dils said. "Cal [Filson] has played very well the last two games, and it was important the he be rewarded with the shutout."

 

After playing five games in 11 days, Mount Greylock has five days off before traveling to Monument Mountain on Oct. 14.
