Hornets Stay Hot With Victory over Indians

WARE, Mass. -- The McCann Tech boys' soccer team continued its late-season surge on Monday, earning its fourth straight victory with a 4-1 win at Ware.

The Hornets (7-8-1) picked up a victory in the first-ever night game in school history and also kept their postseason hopes alive. If Adam Kozik's club can earn a victory in one of its final two games, McCann should have a good chance to finish second in the Tri-County League and clinch a spot in the Western Mass. tournament.

Junior forward Chad Raimer scored a pair of goals in the first half to get the Hornets off to a positive start. He netted an unassisted tally in the 27th minute before scoring off of a pass over the top from Dillion Carr seven minutes later, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead at the half. It was Raimer's 11th and 12th goals of the season, while Carr collected his first varsity point with his assist.

"Ware gave us a lot of room on offense, so this game was sealed from the start," Kozik said.

McCann kept the pressure on after halftime, bumping the lead up to 3-0 when freshman Shane Fuller finished off a feed from classmate Damon Couture. Senior captain Nate Gutmann then put the game away three minutes later by scoring off of a pass from Fuller. Evan James broke up the Hornets' shutout attempt, however, by netting a goal for Ware in the 66th minute.

Senior defender Mike Pedercini led a McCann defense that made the difference in a game in which both teams got off 19 shots. Goalkeeper Connor Vazquez finished with 14 saves for the Hornets, who next play at Commerce at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
