SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Lenox girls soccer team knew what it was going up against playing Monson in Sunday’s Class D Western Massachusetts final.

 

Just more than two weeks ago these two met for the second time in the regular season, and Sunday’s outcome was the same as the first two as the Mustangs rode off with a 7-2 win.

 

This time Lenox got on the board first just inside two minutes from Solia Herndon-Schmid, who tucked her shot in the lower left corner giving Lenox the early lead and much needed confidence going up against Monson.

 

The lead didn’t last long as Emmy Finnegan took the ball up the wing and sent a low driven cross into the box for Tennessee Murphy to put it away. It was a frantic start for both teams, but it seemed like that equalizing goal gave the Mustangs the extra pep to continue and go for more.

 

Manson took control of the game after the first five minutes and it never looked back.

 

The Mustangs were able to use the width of the field to string passes back and forth and this lead to a barrage of attempts at goal, a few that Lenox keeper Aliza Munch had to make great saves on. It was only a matter of time before Monson found the back of the net, and that time finally came off the foot of Hannah Murphy, who got behind the defense on a nice through ball to make it 2-1.

 

Monson continued the attack, this time up the right side of the field with a nice string of passes that sent Tennessee Murphy through as she rounded the keeper and finished the shot for her second goal of the night. Murphy then completed the hat trick moments later, making it a 4-1 at the end of the half.

 

The second half brought on even more pressure from Monson and it was just too much for Lenox to handle. The passing ability and speed this team had was just too much for anyone to match.

 

Monson added a fifth goal and second of the night for Hannah Murphy and they didn’t stop at that. They added two more after that to make it 7-1 and it looked like it was all but over.

Credit to Lenox for not giving up throughout the match as Medeja Rudenskaite scored a consolation goal late in the game. It was a well played game from Monson who was undefeated leading up to this game and averaged just under seven goals per game throughout the regular season and playoffs and they earned the Class D Wmass title with no doubts.
