NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- With leading scorer Mary Nguyen and starting stopper Katie Hancock out of the game due to injury, McCann Tech girls' soccer coach Mike Dowling was looking for someone to step up in his team's game against Putnam on Tuesday.

The Hornets' coach found more than a few players willing to take the job, as three different girls scored goals in a 5-0 home win over the Beavers. Senior Brittany Briggs scored twice in the first half, once on a penalty kick and once in live action, to give McCann (4-2, 4-0) a 3-0 lead at halftime. Sophomore forward Jocelynne Smith started off the scoring for the hosts, finishing off a pass from junior Alex Lincoln just two minutes into the game.

Dowling's club outshot Putnam 19-3 in the game and held a decisive 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore midfielder Jordan Prevey got into the action late in the match, scoring a pair of goals set up by Briggs and sophomore Vicki Crawford in the final 10 minutes of the contest.

Senior goalkeepr Becky Daniels only needed to make three saves to earn her second shutout of the season. Makah Smith, however, was very busy in the Beaver's net, making 15 stops in the game.

The Hornets return to action on Friday with a home game against St. Mary's at 4 p.m.
