NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The McCann Tech girls' soccer team is being thrown right into the fire in the 2011 season.

Because of a rainout last week, the Hornets open up the year with four games in a five-day span. Mike Dowling's team started off its busy week with a win on Monday, however, defeating Westfield Voc. 3-0 at home.

Junior Mary Nguyen scored a pair of goals in the victory, the first coming on an unassisted tally just four and half minutes into the game. Nguyen, one of four captains on the McCann squad this year, later put the game on ice by scoring off of a nice cross from junior Alexa Durant right after halftime. Junior Katie Hancock sandwiched a goal in between by finishing off a pass from classmate Alex Lincoln midway through the first half.

Dowling gave credit to senior Brittany Briggs and sophomore Breeana Rodriguez for a fine defensive effort that helped senior goalkeeper Becky Daniels earn her first shutout of the year. Daniels did most of her work in the second half, making five of her eight saves in the frame.

The Hornets are back in action again on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. road game against Commerce.
