NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The McCann Tech girls' soccer team started the season off by blowing out its opponents. This week was a little different, however, as the Hornets learned how to win the close games.

Mike Dowling's club defeated Mount Everett 3-2 on Thursday for its third straight one-goal win this week. The competition certainly got a little tougher than the first four games this year in which McCann outscored its opponents 24-0. Still, the Hornets showed they could buckle down in pressure situations, earning three more wins this week to improve their record to 7-0, 5-0 in league play.

Senior forward Mary Nguyen notched her fourth hat trick of the season against the Eagles, scoring two goals in the first half and one more in the second. Nguyen scored twice within a four-minute span to give the hosts a 2-0 lead less than 20 minutes into the game. Everett's Hannah Joyce scored off a pass from Deseraye Conaway in the 22nd minute, however, cutting McCann's lead down to 2-1 at halftime.

Nguyen added her third goal of the game in the 50th minute, though, finishing off senior Alex Lincoln's second assist of the day. Taylor Garrett added another goal for the Eagles (2-6) with just over nine minutes left in the game, but the Hornets held on down the stretch to cap off their 3-0 week.

McCann held a slight 18-15 edge in shots in the game, with junior Alex Wood making 13 saves in goal. Keeper Samantha Hoover also had nice outing for the Eagles, stopping 15 shots on the day.

The Hornets next play at St. Joe's at 4 p.m. on Monday.
