EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. -- East Longeadow handed the Hoosac Valley girls soccer team a 3-0 loss on Saturday.

The Sparans, who went to the quarterfinals of the Western Mass Division 1 tournament last fall, were a good early-season test for the Hurricanes, according to first-year Hoosac Valley coach Kathy Budaj.

"This was a great game for the girls to step up and play at a higher level," Budaj said. "I am happy with how hard they worked. This will help us tremendously as a whole team.

"They were fast, physical, disciplined and skilled. I thought the girls adjusted well. They have much more depth and we ran out of steam toward the end."

Kailynne Frederick made 12 saves for the 'Canes (1-1).

Hoosac Valley has another test on Wednesday, hosting defending Western Mass D3 champion Wahconah at 4 p.m.
