CHESHIRE, Mass. -- The Monson girls soccer team scored the game's first two goals and hung on for a 2-1 win over Hoosac Valley on Friday.

"This was a great game against a very good team," Hoosac coach Kathy Budaj said. "Both teams had moments of great play."'

Monson last year won the state championship in Division 4.

Marly Missenbaum gave the visitors a 1-0 half-time lead, and Shannon Jalbert stretched the lead to 2-0 in the second minute of the second half.

Olivia Bresett set up Claudia Bresett for Hoosac's first goal of the season midway through the second half. But the 'Canes were not able to get the equalizer.

"It was nice to get a game under our belt to see what types of things are working and what still needs some work," Budaj said. "Playing well against a quality team like this definitely helps the girls to keep moving in the right direction."

Kailynne Frederick stopped eight shots for Hoosac (0-1).
