ORANGE, Mass. -- Claudia Bresett scored one goal and assisted on another Friday to lead the Hoosac Valley girls soccer team to a 3-1 win over Mahar in the first round of the Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament.

After eighth-seeded Mahar (12-6-1) scored on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute, the Hurricanes immediately answered with Bresett’s goal off an assist from Ellie Field.’

“On the initial [penalty] kick, Kailynne [Frederick] made a great save,” Hoosac coach Kathy Budaj said. “Unfortunatel,y her save went right to the foot of the kicker, and she finished. I called a timeout and told the girls to rebound from this, and they did.

“Off the kick off they passed well, took it down and scored to tie it up, 1-1.

It stayed tied  at half-time, but early in the second half, Bresett set up Chloe Martel to give Hoosac the lead.

“From there, we worked hard and had many opportunities but couldn't cash in,” Budaj said. “Then a beautiful play from Shaleigh [Levesque] to Olivia [Bresett] gave us a 3-1 lead.

“They called timeout and came out hard, pressing, but our defensive line held strong.”

Frederick finished with three saves for the ninth-seeded Huricanes (11-7-1) who advance to face No. 1 Monument Mountain in the quarter-finals on a day to be announced.
