NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — In a game between rivals, it's always good to strike first, and that is exactly what the visiting Hoosac Valley Hurricanes did on Monday.

In the 4th minute, sophomore Marissa Felter took a pass from freshman Madison Ryan and broke free from the Drury defense to score on Drury goaltender Ali Tatro to make it 1-0.

The Hurricanes (1-0) controlled much of the play but were unable to beat Tatro again in the first half. Senior Danielle Racette anchored the Blue Devils (0-2) defense stopping a lot of Hoosac's advances. Hoosac took seven shots to Drury's three in the first half.

"Unfortunately, we came out flat and gave up an early goal, which was hard to recover from," Blue Devils head coach Molly Meczywor said. "In addition, we did not play a possession game but, instead, ended up playing a kick-and-run style.

"We did play well in the second half but were unable to put the ball in the net."

In the second half Drury came out aggressive and carried the play for the first eight and half minutes. After junior Alison Tassone's header hit the goal post Hoosac Valley took a time out to try to settle things down.

It seemed to work as Hoosac took back control of the game, and in the 36th minute of the second half, junior Megan Rodowicz received a corner kick, and her header hit the top crossbar. That didn't discourage Rodowicz because two minutes later she made a terrific play taking the ball out of the corner and going by two Drury defenders and shooting the ball in the top corner of the net to make it 2-0. That would be all Hoosac would need to get the win.

Tatro made 10 saves for the Blue Devils while Hoosac goalie Megan Richardson made seven. Drury plays host to Mount Everett on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 4:15 while Hoosac Valley travels to St Joe, also on Thursday at 4.
