It feels like we're just more than a month into the fall season, but the post-season is just around the corner. And this week's iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athletes of the Week are helping their respective teams build strong momentum heading into the playoffs.

After a .500 start through four games, Mary Elliot and the the Lenox girls soccer team has been on a tear, going 7-0-1 and ranking in the top four in the most recent MIAA Division 5 power rankings.

This week, Elliot was in the middle of things for a Lenox offense that scored 13 goals in three games.

She had a goal and an assist in a 5-0 win over Granby to start the week, a goal and two assists in a 3-3 tie against Northampton and a goal and an assist to finish the week at Hoosac Valley.

For the season, she leads Lenox with nine assist and is just behind the team's goal-scoring leader, Aliza Munch, with eight goals.

The Millionaires will face a major challenge this week when they entertain D5 leader Monson on Wednesday afternoon. The first time they teams met, the Mustangs rode off with a 6-0 win at home on Sept. 21 -- the last time Lenox has finished on the short end of the scoreboard.

The Hoosac Valley football team has not lost since Sept. 10, when the D8 Hurricanes took D4 Northampton to overtime.

Since that night, the Hurricanes are outscoring opponents by a combined margin of 130-14 in four straight wins, the last three by shutout.

On Saturday afternoon in Cheshire, Hoosac Valley was a little short-handed, but senior quarterback Carson Meczywor stepped up on both sides of the ball to keep the winning streak going.

Meczywor threw for 98 yards and a touchdown and ran for 30 yards and a touchdown in a 14-0 win. He also picked off a pass in the end zone to help deny visiting Frontier on its best scoring chance of the afternoon.

Hoosac Valley, which has played four of its first five games at home, hits the road Friday to face Intercounty South foe Belchertown.

The iBerkshires.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Southwestern Vermont Health Care.
